Mode Network: the chain for AI Agents

Anthony Allen

Swap tokens on Mode, the AI focused layer 2. Trade with no added fees, and embrace gasless trades and cross-chain swaps for instant, best-price execution. Only on Matcha.

Mode Network is a Layer-2 blockchain focused on AI agents. Built using Optimism’s OP Stack, Mode is part of the Optimism Superchain and benefits from enhanced interoperability with chains like Base, OP Mainnet, Zora and dozens more, as well as the broader ecosystem of EVM-based chains.

Mode’s focus on onchain AI agents targets scaling DeFi to billions of users. The Mode and Mode ecosystem teams’ deep DeFi roots position them well to curate bespoke and bleeding-edge AI powered DeFi strategies which can scale in both accessibility and yield generation.

AI agents on Mode

Crypto AI agents introduce a new and exciting onchain paradigm, where autonomous AI can be given ownership of a crypto wallet or other onchain tools and use them to provide trading insights, launch new tokens, or even trade tokens between themselves.

Mode Network has positioned itself as the premier chain for AiFi (AI-finance), a term it uses to encompass the rising “AI-powered financial system” where AI agents play an integral role in Web3 and DeFi. To this end, Mode is focused on supporting developers who create AI agents that can interact onchain in various areas, including MEV, arbitrage, contract auditing, and other tasks that make DeFi more efficient and allow AI agents to proliferate.

Mode has also launched an AI Agent app store to bring visibility to the projects being developed within its ecosystem. Check it out on the Mode website for inspiration on how to get involved with AI crypto agents.

AI agent Clanker on Base has already seen over a billion dollars of volume.

With AI crypto projects seeing a major uptick in share of voice at the end of 2024, Mode Network bridges a vital gap between onchain tooling and the rapid shift of developers who are looking to create AI agents for Web3. As early experiments like Clanker have exploded in popularity, with tens of thousands of tokens deployed and over $1 billion dollars of volume in its first month ($200k from matcha alone), Mode is well-positioned to capture a lucrative share of the AiFi narrative.

Why use Matcha to trade on Mode Network?

Mode Network’s growth in 2024

Mode has grown to over $480M in TVL in the last year since its mainnet launch at the end of January 2024. Much of this growth occurred in spring, reaching a TVL peak of around $700M before bottoming out at $300M in November. While originally marketed as a modular, scalable blockchain, Mode Network’s pivot to the AI agent economy helps to differentiate Mode from other superchain networks and could be instrumental in attracting more users in 2025.

Mode and modular architecture

Mode is a modular blockchain. Having been built on the foundations of OP Stack, it is able to use an assortment of different infrastructure components to carry out the tasks of individual layers (execution, settlement, consensus and data availability). While Mantle, another L2 network on Matcha, uses EigenDA to support Data Availability, there is no specific mention in Mode’s documentation of the ways in which this modularity is leveraged.

Mode Network roadmap

Given the current, blinding pace of innovation in AI agents, developing an AI-focused blockchain is bound to see multiple pivots throughout the coming cycle. That said, the Mode team has laid out some key areas of development for the coming year, and has also enabled access to up to $10M dollars in seed funding for their AIFi accelerator program, covering areas such as AI-powered treasury management, wallets, yield automation and governance.

Key focus areas of development outlined in the Mode roadmap for 2025 include:

  • AI Vault Layer: while there is little concrete information about this, it may reflect Mode’s intentions for AI-powered treasury management, including personal fund management.
  • Mobile Apps: bringing Mode’s AIFi ecosystem on Android and iOS.
  • Fundraising platform: a hub for crypto AI projects to find investors.
  • AI to AI financial services: the last milestone envisions a scalable ecosystem where AI agents can tackle complex financial roles fully autonomously.
  •  Bittensor “Synth” subnet, providing critical infrastructure for AI financial modeling.
