Matcha Auto: gasless swaps and MEV protection

Anthony Allen

Make your trades go further with Matcha Auto and enjoy a premium DeFi trading experience where trades confirm faster, gas is offset, and sandwich attacks become a thing of the past!

Matcha Auto is a next-gen experience that brings the latest in metatransaction technology to your favorite DEX aggregator. User experience often gets buried in the complex world of web 3, but with Matcha Auto you can enjoy the convenience and low costs of a CEX without compromising on custody or decentralization.

Faster trade confirmation, MEV protection, and frictionless swaps without needing any native tokens are just some of the reasons to use Matcha Auto. For a nominal fee of just 0.15% of the traded amount - the same fee Uniswap charges for regular swaps - Matcha Auto can actually save you money. Read on to find out how it works and the different ways you can reduce costs by switching to Auto.

Matcha Auto is currently available on Ethereum and Polygon. Try it now!

Why use Matcha Auto instead of Standard

Standard swaps on Matcha are free of any platform fees and give you more control of execution, while still benefiting from aggregated liquidity and smart order routing. So why should you use Matcha Auto instead? Here’s a few reasons:

  • Faster trade confirmation
  • Reduce failed trades by 85%
  • Swap without gas
How to switch to Matcha Auto
Switch to Matcha Auto from the trade module.

As you can see, the main advantages are speed, confidence and convenience: with Matcha Auto, you can be sure your trade will be executed with optimal settings, in a privileged environment that reduces the risks of MEV or failed trades. Let’s take a look at each in more detail!

Gasless swaps

Keeping track of your ETH balance when you’re trying to catch a trade can be a massive pain point, costing you time and causing you to miss critical opportunities. Rather than refueling on gas just to unblock your trades - and watching the purchase fees pile up - you can just turn on Matcha Auto and pay the gas cost from the token you receive!

How does it work? Matcha is powered by 0x, one of the leading infrastructure providers in DeFi. That allows it to leverage the full stack of 0x APIs, getting you the best rates, the best execution times and, with the latest 0x TxRelay API, gasless swaps!

Gasless swaps using meta transactions on a crypto DEX
Using Matcha Auto, 0x pays the gas fees for you.

TxRelay API allows you to place an order, signed off-chain by your wallet, and then have it executed on your behalf by 0x. Using what’s known as a metatransaction, 0x pays the gas cost of your transaction using the native token, instead taking an equivalent of the tokens you receive in return, so you get the same great value without the hassle of tracking gas.

What is a meta transaction?

A meta transaction is a model where the transaction is signed by one wallet but then offloaded to another entity to handle the execution. As defined in EIP-1776, this allows you to interact with the Ethereum network without holding any Ether to pay for gas, as you only need to sign and submit data about the transaction to 0x without actually performing an onchain transaction.

When 0x receives this data to the TxRelay API, it can then execute the transaction for you and, since the data includes your wallet details and signature, everything is settled directly into your wallet.

Faster trade confirmation

Time is money, as the saying goes, and in crypto markets every second counts! In volatile market conditions, you want your trade to settle instantly to get the best value for your money. Even under ideal circumstances, it’s hard to tell if your transaction will be confirmed in the next block, the one after, or if you’ll end up waiting several minutes for confirmation.

On Matcha Auto, your transaction will be settled within two blocks over 90% of the time, while also protecting against malicious frontrunning. That means that you can be confident that the order you submit will be executed within seconds, without getting caught in a gas bidding war. And since you’re trading through private channels, the nominal fee you pay is quickly recovered through lower slippage, minimal opportunity cost, and MEV protection, which we’ll look at below.

Why it takes time to complete a crypto transaction

Blockchains are reliable for keeping data valid across a decentralized, global network, but they also have built-in delays which are needed to allow blocks to propagate across that network. Under busy conditions, this delay can lead to congestion and increased transaction fees, as wallets try to outbid each other to break through the gridlock.

Rather than pay inflated fees to try and get your trades settled, Matcha connects directly with block builders to have your transaction processed faster and more reliably. Compared to other DEXs and DEX aggregators, trades you make using Matcha Auto are around 10 times more likely to confirm, with revert rates of 1% or less, compared to an average of 10% on platforms like Uniswap and 1inch, saving you from wasting time making repeated attempts to get your trade in.

MEV and sandwich attack protection

As soon as you submit a trade to a public mempool, it can be seen by everyone. MEV (maximal extractable value) hunters search these mempools to find trades which they can arrange in a block in a way that allows them to profit from the order of execution.

One of the most common ways MEV manifests is as a sandwich attack, where your trade is front-run, meaning the attacker buys the token you wanted just before your trade executes, and then back-run once your trade goes through, meaning they dump the tokens back on the market, leaving you paying more than you expect without benefiting from any increase in the asset’s value.

With Matcha Auto enabled, your trades benefit from the privileged relationship between 0x and block builders, allowing them to be executed via private mempools where they can’t be targeted by MEV attacks, or otherwise take advantage of inbuilt slippage protection to ensure you get the price you’re quoted, without unwanted surprises.

Frictionless trades for better value

Matcha Auto brings faster trade confirmation and fewer failed trades, while keeping the same great prices. While you can still swap for free in Standard mode, Auto gives you the confidence you need that the trades you make will go through, first time, without any nasty surprises. For a small fee, you can actually save money by reducing slippage and avoiding sandwiches.
